Set in Baku in 1910, the film tells of the pure love of two young people, Sarvar and Gulnaz, and of love's victory over money, ignorance and the remnants of feudalism. Alongside the main characters it portrays the crowd around Rustam Bey — merchants, traders, street toughs and reactionary, venal journalists. Based on motifs from Uzeyir Hajibeyov's operetta If Not This One, Then That One, it is the first Azerbaijani feature film in colour.
