The events take place in Karabakh in the middle of the nineteenth century. Monsieur Jordan, a well-known French botanist, is a guest of the landowner Hatamkhan Agha. He wishes to take his host's nephew Shahbaz Bey to Paris and have him educated there, but relatives who cling blindly to feudal and patriarchal custom resort to every kind of trick to prevent the journey. The film is based on motifs from Mirza Fatali Akhundov's comedy The Tale of Monsieur Jordan and the Famous Sorcerer Dervish Mastali Shah.
