The story takes place in present-day Baku. Arzu is a young woman about to finish school and preparing to enter medical university — though she is far from free in choosing a profession. Her mother Sabina, a good surgeon, wants to shape her daughter's life as she sees fit and can imagine her future only in medicine; she is also looking among the sons of her well-off friends for a suitable husband, and what her daughter thinks does not interest her. Arzu resists this calculating world. She also takes music lessons, and there she meets Rafael, the son of her teacher Nargiz. At first he stirs confused feelings in her, but Arzu comes to understand that she loves him. The age gap between them is large. Rafael has had a hard life: wounded in the war, he spent a long time in hospital after a concussion. There is nothing between them but a shared love of music — and that is enough for love to grow. The situation is further strained because Ali, from a wealthy family and recently back from London, has also fallen for Arzu; Sabina and Rana are friends who have known each other since childhood and believe their children's happiness is in their hands. What will Arzu choose — to do as her mother says and gain material stability, or to stay with Rafael and live a hard life? And what happens if the spell of music passes and harmony drowns in the noise of ordinary life?
