Khilafa, a circus trainer, dies from a blow struck by a horse. Before her death she asks her husband Alashraf at least to wait out the year of mourning before marrying again. Alashraf gives his word but does not keep it: forty days later he marries Arifa. Khilafa, however, will not let the two be together.
