Gunash, a psychology student, travels to a village school for her practical training. On the long journey she meets simple country people — the kind but insistent Magsud, and Nargiz, a teacher who seems severe yet is soft-hearted. Soon she learns of a boy named Abbas who lives with his grandmother and speaks to no one: silent, isolated, and called “mad” by the village children. Gunash tries to reach him, bringing books and toys and attempting to talk. In time she sees that Abbas has no illness but a different way of seeing: he is at one with nature, senses harmony and is sensitive to injustice. The village's daily troubles — poverty, water shortage and the hopelessness of its people — become entwined with his fate. Trying to free a hidden spring, he is trapped under the rocks. The event unites the villagers for the first time, and saving the boy becomes a symbol of hope. At the end of the film Abbas smiles in class for the first time and answers a question. His voice is not illness — it is the strength of hope and faith.
