
Hamida Omarova was born on 25 April 1957 in Baku. From 1975 to 1979 she studied in the acting department of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography. From 1979 to 1993 she worked at the "Azerbaijanfilm" studio named after J. Jabbarli, and from 1992 to 1993 at the Union of Cinematographers of Azerbaijan. Besides appearing in films, she has actively taken part in the dubbing and voicing of more than 500 feature films, and has authored the books "Feminism in Azerbaijani Cinema", "American Cinema: 1895–1945", and "A History of American Cinema". She currently heads the Department of Film Studies at the Azerbaijan State University of Culture and Arts. Since 1986 she has hosted the "Retro" film programme on Azerbaijan State Television, and since 2002 she has been the scriptwriter of the programme "Kinoştrix". She has created such characters as Shafiga ("Qızıl uçurum" / Golden Abyss), Chinara ("Anlamaq istəyirəm" / I Want to Understand), Zumrud ("Yol əhvalatı" / A Road Story), the bride ("Vah!"), Zeynab ("Babamızın babasının babası" / Our Grandfather's Grandfather's Grandfather), Telli ("Qorxma, mən səninləyəm" / Don't Be Afraid, I'm With You), Maleyka ("Üzeyir ömrü" / Uzeyir's Life), Afaq ("Nizami"), Shafiga ("Musiqi müəllimi" / The Music Teacher), Tamara ("Burulğan" / The Whirlpool), Nazli ("Şirbalanın məhəbbəti" / Shirbala's Love), Nuriya ("Divlər zindanı" / The Giants' Dungeon, Iranian production), Nurzad ("Əzablı yollar" / Roads of Torment), Zivar ("Doğma sahillər" / Native Shores), the khan's daughter ("Dədə Qorqud oğuznamələri" / The Oghuz Tales of Dede Gorgud), Elmira ("Dronqo"), and others.
