
Vagif Samadoghlu was born on 5 June 1939 in Baku, into the family of the famous Azerbaijani poet Samad Vurgun. He was originally descended from the Vakilov family of the village of Yukhari Salahli in the Gazakh district. He studied at the Bulbul Music School and at the Uzeyir Hajibeyov Azerbaijan State Conservatory. He served as head of the arts department of the editorial board of the Azerbaijan Soviet Encyclopedia (1968–1971) and editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Oghuz Eli" (1992–1994). He completed a specialised course at the Tchaikovsky Moscow Conservatory (1962–1963). He then worked as a specialist piano teacher at the Azerbaijan State Conservatory (1963–1971). He worked as head of the literary section of the film-actor theatre at the Jafar Jabbarli Azerbaijanfilm studio (1982–1985). He was also seriously engaged in poetry, theatre and drama. His first published work, "Seven Poems", appeared in the journal "Azerbaijan" in 1963. He subsequently appeared regularly in the periodical press and served as editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Oghuz Eli" (1992–1994). He was elected a deputy of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan (2000). Vagif Samadoghlu died in Baku on 28 January 2015. He was buried in the First Alley of Honour on 29 January.
