
Orkhan Fikratoglu was born in 1966 in the city of Baku. From 1983 to 1991 he studied at the Institute of World Literature in Moscow. He began working as a lighting technician in cinema in 1983. At various times he served as editor-in-chief of the Jafar Jabbarli Azerbaijanfilm film studio, the State Cinema Committee, AzerTelefilm and the newspaper Gunay. He was deputy director of the intergovernmental MIR television company, director of the Mozalan satirical newsreel, and chief commentator of the ANS television company. He is the author of fourteen fiction and three non-fiction books. His first short story was published in the magazine Kirpi in 1981. Since then he has published hundreds of short stories, novellas and non-fiction pieces in the periodical press. He is the screenwriter of dozens of feature films. His works have been published in Iran, Turkey, Bulgaria, Sweden and many other countries around the world. His novel Seven was awarded a prize in Germany. His short stories have been included in textbooks at Oxford University. He is the laureate of a number of national awards. His stories have been included in the World Prose Anthology. Orkhan Fikratoglu's plays TAS, The Death of the Slingshot and The Suffix and the Suffix have been staged in theatres across the country. Dozens of films have been made based on his screenplays. In 2023 he was appointed advisor to the Minister of Culture. From December of that same year he also served as acting director-general of the Azerbaijan Film Agency (ARKA). In April 2025 he was appointed advisor to the Minister of Culture.
